| A
call was placed to the pictures desk announcing: "Two photos....... European
soccer action.... speak to you between pictures..... AM double speed...
sixty seconds white..........coming now......". The drum turned, an audio
signal broke the silence and a cursor on a bar with two small lights and
a photo-electric cell, started moving from left to right, converting the
light reflected from the b&w print, into a signal which was piggy-backed
onto the connected phone line. While the first print was rolling on the
drum transmitter, the photographer returned to the lab, edited a second
frame, quickly printed and captioned it, so once the first transmission
completed, a second photo was ready to move. A black and white photo took
seven minutes of transmission time and a color project took three times
longer as they were sent as filtered color separations - magenta, cyan,
yellow. Below you can see an original transmission print, newsroom fax
print out and a tear sheet. |
